Hello and welcome to my Bafang BBS02 forum / message board. The questions and answers below have been gathered from the main BBS02 article over the last few years. I have recently updated and re-published the article and I didn’t want to discard the hundreds of useful Q and A’s posted by readers.
This isn’t a forum in the classic sense, it’s more like a message board where you can post a question and hopefully receive an answer. I have kept it simple by not requiring any kind of registration to post. But, all comments are held in moderation before being approved. This means that it may take up to 24 hrs for your message to be displayed. This is an unfortunate necessity due to the high levels of spam.
Because I am using the native comments feature on this website, there will not be any notifications of replies to posts. You will need to check back periodically.
Forum Topics
Below, I have listed some of the most popular topics discussed. Please keep all questions relevant to the Bafang BBS01 / BBS02 / BBSHD. I will always try and personally answer messages, but occasionally it may relate to a problem I haven’t encountered before.
- Compatibility: e.g. will the Bafang BBS02 fit a certain type of bicycle
- Installation issues: Problems with the installation process
- Motor faults: A very broad topic covering a multitude of problems
- Programming: Not something I have any experience with but I can point you in the right direction for resources
Everyone is welcome, but please keep the conversation specifically about the BBS01 / BBS02 / BBSHD or similar motors like the Tongsheng TSDZ2. Thanks for reading.

Tony
Hi Tony, great review!
I’m thinking of buying a bafang kit to replace a voilamart 1000w rear drive kit I’ve been borrowing from a friend. I bought a battery (48v 13ah), as my friends kit didn’t come with one.
I use it to commute 11.5 miles to work and back. The ride is half flat and half hilly, with a couple of steep kicks.
This rear drive kit, using the throttle, pretty much maxed out all the way, gets me there in just over half an hour, which is ideal, as it lets me get home in time for my toddlers bath/bedtime.
I’m running it on an old 90s steel MTB (I have a passion for retro MTB), but am thinking of a mid drive so I can build a more modern bike with a bolt thru/boost frame.
What would be your advice, based on the battery I already own, and my commute requirements…?
Part of me thinks I should just stick with a rear drive kit, as it’s cheap and fast.
Hi Al,
Personally, I’d stick with hub motor for your commute. Bafang motors are great, but they can be a pain if they go wrong, plus there’s the extra wear and tear on the drivetrain. If you were building a bike for off-road riding, then the BBS02 would definitely be the best option. You wouldn’t improve your top speed much with a mid-drive, but you’d see a big improvement in efficiency and hill climbing.
I hope this helps.
All the best,
Tony
I have a peugeot from the 70’s with shimano crane derailleurs. Do you see any issues converting this bike?
A 1970’s Peugeot should have a threaded bottom bracket, so I don’t see any problems and the BBS02B should fit. You may need to re-route the gear cable but apart from that it should be straightforward. I have converted a few 70’s bikes in the past with this motor.

Tony
Hej!
Tony
What an old thread but a good one! Great info on here. I’ll see if I can resurrect it. lol
I recently purchased a BBSHD and the hall sensor went out on my first long ride after installing (is that an easy fix?). I’m sending it back but now I’m worried about getting another one if they aren’t reliable. On many threads I see lots of people looking for parts or repair information. Is this the usual trend with these Bafang units, Love them when they work but hell to keep running? Here in BC Canada they are over $1000 for just the motor kit, no battery, I feel for that much money they should be way more reliable…
Is there any new news for E-bike kits? Is Bafang still making units and parts, as I know they have been out for a long time now? Wouldn’t want to get one if their getting discontinued in a year.
After reading many posts on her I’m interested in the BBS02B 750w, I felt the 1000w one was too much power (for the time it was working) and its $400 cheaper, but still worried I’m going to just be looking for parts or repairing all the time. I am 300lb and have a heavy duty MTB bike for that reason but still thinking I just might not be able to keep the Bafang running for long. I’m not into speed just help on the hills. Maybe I’m just beating a dead horse here and should just take out a mortgage for a new bike with a built in Yamaha unit…
Any info or thoughts would be very appreciated as I’m stumped on what the right course is here.
Hi Chad,
I ran a BBS02B for a year and 2000 miles without any problems, but I limited the peak current to 18A and rarely used full assist and never fitted a throttle. I’ve had customers who’ve ridden 6k+ miles without the slightest problem and others who have had problems within the first few miles. It seems luck of the drawer with the Bafang – it’s a great motor (if you get a good one) but can be frustratingly unreliable if you get a bad one.
The BBSHD is meant to be more reliable than the BBS02 due to better MOSFETs and better heat dissipation – the controllers seem more durable but other problems like hall sensors and PAS sensors persist in some motors.
There’s always good parts availability and I don’t think Bafang are planning on replacing it anytime soon. A factory built e-bike with a Bosch, Shimano or Yamaha motor would be more reliable and will come with a 2-year warranty, but even these go wrong from time to time, and they’re a lot more expensive to fix if they do go wrong (outside of warranty).
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Cheers,
Tony
Hej Tony.

Saluti,
Tony
Hi,
I decided to convert my Merida Matts Cruise 5.5 26″ bike with an aluminum frame, I think 2006 year, into an electric bike. The topic of electric bikes is completely unknown to me, but I bought a BBS02B 48V 750W 25A motor yesterday on a promotion in the store on AliExpress, because I read, that this engine has the ability to program the driver through the BafangConfigTool program.
Today I read on the Polish forum that the Bafang company blocks this possibility on factory-assembled bikes in Europe and it is not even possible to read the factory-set parameters using standard read-write cables.
https: // forum.arbiter.pl/viewtopic.php?t=10977&highlight=bafang
I don’t know if that also applies to the conversion kits we put on the bike ourselves. Is there anything known about this, what it really is? I would be displeased if the motor I purchased did not have this ability to change parameters. I sent an inquiry to the store today, but I have no answer yet.
The second problem I encountered was the choice of battery for the motor. I bought Hailong battery 48V 17.5Ah Samsung/Panasonic/LG 3500mah, but today I realized that it has a current of 30A, like all 48V batteries available in this store. I read somewhere
that both the motor and the battery should have the same current parameters, i.e. 25A. Is that the truth? Will this battery be compatible with the engine? I asked this question to the store and I am waiting for an answer.
I don’t ask if my Merida bike is suitable for the convention, because I can’t find any mention of it on the Internet.
I measured the bottom bracket length and it is 66mm, so I hope everything goes well.
Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
Hi,
The limiting factor does not effect Bafang e-bike conversion kits, only factory e-bikes that are EN15194 certified. So you should be able to configure the motor parameters to suit your needs.
Regarding the battery, it doesn’t matter if its 30A as that is the maximum continuous discharge possible (for that battery). If the motor controller is only drawing 25A, that’s all the battery will provide. I’ve used 40A BMS batteries on BBS02B before without issues.
Your Merida looks suitable as it has a fairly standard frame and specification.

Tony
Lieber Tony ,
Gracias
Hi Tony. I’m very glad that I came up to this as I am thinking about converting my old bike with Bafang mid motor kit. BUT, and this is a big BUT, I do need a expert advice.
The bike that I have is 1998 Scott Boulder, the frame size eludes me as I can’t find it on it (under bottom bracket there is a M7 HI186 imprinted, but no idea that that could be).
Anyhow, old bike and also has V-brakes. Mock-up battery seems to fit but I am still not convinced this conversion would make sense. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Hi,
I’ve converted quite a few vintage MTB’s and usually they’re nice and straightforward to convert. The only issue I’ve had is removing seized bottom brackets. Apart from that, the Bafang motor should fit no problem. Because the BBS02B is so powerful it would be worth upgrading your v-brakes if possible – something like Shimano Deore XT. Or, if possible fit a front suspension fork that has disc fitment and get a disc-specific wheel. Having a hydraulic brake on the front would be better, but good quality v-brakes should do the job in dry weather.
All the best,
Tony
