Hello and welcome to my Tongsheng TSDZ2 forum/message board. The questions and answers below have been gathered from the main TSDZ2 review article over the last few years. I have recently updated and re-published the article and I didn’t want to discard the hundreds of useful Q and A’s posted by readers.
This isn’t a forum in the classic sense, it’s more like a message board where you can post a question and hopefully receive an answer. I have kept it simple by not requiring any kind of registration to post. But, all comments are held in moderation before being approved. This means that it may take up to 24 hrs for your message to be displayed. This is an unfortunate necessity due to the high levels of spam.
Because I am using the native comments feature on this website, there will not be any notifications of replies to posts. You will need to check back periodically.
Forum Topics
Below, I have listed some of the most popular topics discussed. Please keep all questions relevant to the Tongsheng TSDZ2. I will always try and personally answer messages, but occasionally it may relate to a problem I haven’t encountered before.
- Compatibility: e.g. will the TSDZ2 fit a certain type of bicycle
- Installation issues: Problems with the installation process
- Motor faults: A very broad topic covering a multitude of problems
- Programming: Not something I have any experience with but I can point you in the right direction for resources
Everyone is welcome, but please keep the conversation specifically about the Tongsheng TSDZ2 or similar motors like the Bafang. Thanks for reading.

Tony, I’m attempting to add a TSDZ2B to a Surly Big Dummy, but have a bit of a quandary on how to attach the motor. The kit instructs attachment via clamp on the chainstays just behind the seat tube. However, the Big Dummy has a solid tube going back from the seat tube. I really don’t want to drill through the steel tube and compromise the integrity of the frame.
In an earlier comment, you mentioned that the Big Dummy is an excellent donor bike and that you’ve converted a few of them. How did you solve this issue?
Thanks for the help,
Theo in Oregon
Hi Theo,
The solution we came up with wasn’t particularly tidy but it did the job. We used a large steel pipe clamp routed around the mounting bracket. With the bracket tightened it held the motor in place. Not the best solution but it did work. I agree with you about drilling a hole. We thought about it at the time and decided against it. Unfortunately I didn’t take photos at the time, but give it a go and see how you get on. You’ll need a clamp with a large diameter, but it needs to be quite narrow to fit.
I hope this helps.
All the best,
Tony
HI PLEASE HELP :
I have a 2019 giant roam 0 with this spec:
CranksetFSA V-Drive, 32-44T
Bottom BracketFSA sealed
and looks like with the hollowtech shimano.
would this fit the tongsheng?
thank you!
i am really confused. wold really appreciate.
Hi,
I’ve fitted a Bafang BBSHD to one of these before without any problems. The main problem I can foresee with the Tongsheng, is the limited clearance between the motor axle and housing. It won’t leave enough room for the rear hydraulic brake hose and rear shifter cable. You will need to re-route these. Other than that, it should fit the bottom bracket shell just fine. The 2018 Roam 0 I converted a couple of years back had a Shimano Deore Hollowtech II BB, so I would imagine your is similar.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Tony
I have been looking for an ebike conversion kit that would be suitable for riding the hills near us. I can climb them with my bikes but the idea of electrical assistance is attractive. The Tongsheng sounds ideal but I’m a little concerned about hearing that they have been discontinued by the manufacturer so how does that affect warranty etc? I was also looking at the Yose Power front hub drive kits but it appears mid drive is the way to go.
Hi Kevin,
It would be worth looking at the Bafang BBS01B, in my experience it’s generally reliable and it is still being manufactured.
Following your advice I purchased the Bafang BBS01B and have fitted it to a 1979 Raleigh Tourer. In the past few days I’ve ridden it nearly 100 miles over the North Downs in the Dover area and its marvelous! In the past I could just about manage the climbs but now the rides are so much more enjoyable. The only mod I made to the supplied kit was to source a smaller 36 tooth chainwheel which I think was a well worthwhile move. Thanks again for your advice.
Hi Kevin,
You’re welcome. Thanks for sharing and I hope you enjoy many more miles.
All the best,
Tony
Hi Tony, many thanks for this article. I have a Vitus Escarpe 2015 as a potential donor bike. I like the Torque sensor mid drive concept of the TongSheng over the pedal assist design of the equivalent Bafang. The BB on my bike is threaded not push fit so I think I am ok but the frame has welded bracket for a chain guide. Will that need to be removed for the motor to fit?
Also do you have any suggestions as to a suitable battery and location? There is not much space in the triangle on this frame. Thanks in advance /Marcus
Hi Marcus,
It depends where the chain guide bracket is located. The main issue with the Tongsheng is limited clearance between the motor housing and BB axle. Regarding battery, your best bet would be a compact bottle battery. I have fitted these in full-suspension frames before and it looks like there should be enough space on the Escarpe.
Another option for battery mounting may be along the flat section of top tube. Some people mount them on the underside of the downtube, but this can cause problems when the forks are compressed under braking. Another option is to have a small battery pack in a frame bag, mounted on the underside of the top tube, or a large saddle bag.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
Cheers,
Tony
Hi Tony, thanks for the practical wisdom here. From the video, I also spotted that the TongSheng has to have some sort of clamp which goes to the bottom of the chain stays. I am guessing this is to ensure the torque sensor has a solid location from which to make its “sensor” work. I presume then that it makes it impossible to fit with a full suspension bike(?). The Bafang didn’t seem to have that requirement as it appears to hold itself with the double clamping nuts around the bb. So the Bafang seems like my only option. Would that be true? Thanks again/ Marcus
Hi Marcus,
The primary function of the clamp (on the TSDZ2) is to prevent the motor from pivoting in the bottom bracket shell. The Bafang uses a ridged steel mounting plate which is meant to bite into the soft alloy of the BB shell and hold the motor in place (although this doesn’t always work in the long term and motors often work loose).
It is possible to fit a Tongsheng on a full suspension MTB, but you will need to find a way of securing the motor. I did this using some steel pipe clamps – it didn’t look particularly pretty but it did the job.
All the best,
Tony
Hi, my bike (state 4130 all road) is a 44t 11 speed. Will this kit work with my bike and are there any options to buy 44T kits?
Hi Nathan,
The Tongsheng will take a standard 110BCD 5-bolt chainring, although this motor doesn’t work great with 11-speed drivetrains due to the drive-side offset. There are sellers on Aliexpress who do a 44t chainring specifically for the Tongsheng – these are ‘dished in’ by a few mm which improves the chainline a little. I’ve ridden a TSDZ2 with 10-speed gearing (11-40 cassette) and it was okay in the higher gears, but used to cog a bit in the lower two gears.
The motor should fit, providing your bike doesn’t have a pressfit bottom bracket. It’s likely you’ll need to re-route the cables on the underside of the BB shell as there’s not enough clearance between the motor axle and housing.
I hope this helps.

Hi do you know where I can get my cube ice bike with tongsheng tsdz2 system fitted. Plugged in for a diagnostic reset. In the Midlands area. Many thanks Graham.
Toni
Hi Tony!
Thansk for very good website and advices!. I have a question about TSDZ2 motor types. I ordered by my mistake for my mountain bike motor which was intended in foot brake function bike. I understand that foot brake function motor haven’t freewheel because otherwise the foot brake would not work. So when I back pedal in my bike, chain will move. In mountain bike freewheel is in back. So I think that is is not harmful. Do you see any problem that I put foot brake function motor in my mountain bike? Whether the motor is completely similar in other functions?
Sami
Hi Sami,
Yes, the coaster brake version will work just fine, the walk assist will be disabled and you won’t be able to fit a throttle. But apart from that, I don’t see aby problems.
Tony
Question bonus:
Bien cordialement, Tony
