First impressions

I have to admit, I had some rather negative preconceptions about this bike. Fortunately, they were proved wrong, and in this Ancheer electric bike review, I will go over the pros and cons of this great value e-bike.

Ancheer Upgraded 500w electric mountain bike

As with most bikes sent through the parcel network, this arrived part-assembled in a large box. Getting this bike ready for the road is straightforward enough (there is a small toolkit included).  The seat post, handlebars, pedals and front wheel needed fitting. If you are not comfortable doing the assembly yourself, then I would advise taking it to your local bike shop to be assembled. You will need to make sure the brakes are properly adjusted, and the gears index correctly before use.

If you’re looking for a Cheap Electric Bike, then this ticks all the right boxes. It is a very basic Chinese-made bike, and although it is built using bargain-basement components, it does the job very well. Plus there are some useful extras fitted, like the headlight, horn and kickstand.

Update

The Ancheer electric bike has been upgraded, and is now available in a more powerful 500w version with a better 36v 12ah battery, this model is available for the US market and has a top speed of 20mph to comply with Federal Law. For the price, it offers excellent value for money and has an improved high-torque hub motor.

Sizing

The Ancheer Pro is only available in one size and it is not suited to tall riders! I’m 6’1 and I found it a little too small for my liking (even with the saddle at maximum height).  I would say the ideal rider height would be between 5’2″ – 5’10”.

Electric Motor

Electric assist is provided by a geared rear hub motor – this type of motor uses nylon planetary gears to enable the motor to spin several times for every wheel rotation (unlike a direct drive hub motor). The advantage of this is more efficiency and higher torque output (which makes it ideal for climbing hills). The downside of this kind of motor is that over time the nylon gears inside the motor can eventually wear out.

Out on the road, I was pleasantly surprised.  The compact 250w geared rear hub motor is powerful enough to help get you up those hills! The cadence-based pedal assist is very basic and works much like an on/off switch. When you start pedalling the motor provides instant power. Another great feature of this bike is that it can be pedalled easily with the power switched off.

As I have previously mentioned, I found this bike a little too small for me, but the saddle felt comfortable enough for shorter journeys.

The control panel does not have an LCD, but at this price, it shouldn’t be an issue.  There are three modes to choose from – low, mid and high. These power modes are altered using the + and – keys on the keypad, with the on/off button in the middle. There is also a five-bar LED battery indicator.

Brakes

The Ancheer Pro comes fitted with mechanical disc brakes (which are fairly typical on an e-bike at this price). They do the job but can feel a little vague and they did squeal a little during the test.  As this is a budget electric bike, it would be a lot to expect high-quality hydraulic brakes. As long as you are aware of the brake’s performance limitations you should be fine.

If you are on a tight budget the Ancheer electric bike is an absolute bargain!

Battery

The removable bottle battery is a small capacity of 36v 8,8ah  or 317wh (watt-hours).  The battery range can be estimated using the 20wh per mile average, which would work out at around 15 miles – this figure may be slightly lower or higher, depending on rider weight and the power level used. The cells in this battery are Chinese-made cells, so do not expect the same longevity from the battery as you would get with Samsung or Panasonic cells. These batteries are cheap enough to replace though and a direct replacement is listed on my electric bike batteries page.

Conclusion

If you are on a tight budget the Ancheer Pro electric bike is an absolute bargain. It also has a lot of very positive buyer reviews.

The build quality is not that bad, the 6061 aluminium frame looks good and the paint finish is nice. The forks are very basic, but they should stand up to road surface lumps and bumps. The 21 gears work well and use budget Shimano thumb shifters.

As long as you are aware of this bike’s limitations and its budget components, then you can’t go far wrong. I would not advise taking this bike for some serious off-road riding though, as I don’t believe it would stand up to much abuse. But for an A to B commuter bike, it is perfect.

The electric motor and battery are water resistant but not waterproof, you can ride it in the rain, but I would not advise riding through fords or deep puddles.

Another plus is that the Ancheer Pro uses a lot of generic electric bike parts, so there shouldn’t be a problem sourcing components including a motor controller, pedal sensor etc.

This bike is shipped from within the EU or USA, so you can expect delivery times of 4-5 working days.

    1. Hi,
Just checked out the product page. Looks pretty good for the price, seems to have lots of positive reviews on Amazon. I’ll see if I can get hold of one to test.

    1. Hi,

It depends on the model. If it has a throttle fitted, you can disconnect and remove it (as these are not allowed on new e-bikes manufactured after 2016). Some Ancheer e-bikes are supplied with the throttle separately (not fitted), as long as you don’t fit it, then legality won’t be a problem as the motor cuts-out at 25 km/h (15.5mph). Throttles were made illegal in 2016 when the law was changed. Under current e-bike law in the UK you can only have a throttle on a bike manufactured before 2016 or on an e-bike conversion kit fitted to a used bicycle.
